S1
 
The S1 Music Broad General Education course gives pupils the opportunity to participate in a range of activities within the three main elements of Music: Performing, Understanding Music and Composition. Pupils follow a performing course on Keyboard, Guitar, Tuned Percussion and Drumkit as well as later in the year having the opportunity to sing, both solo and as part of a group and also to begin working on bass guitar. Pupils follow a general musicianship course which provides them with basic literacy skills to begin reading music, supporting their learning as a performer. There is an Understanding Music course which covers a number of topics including Horror Music and Instruments of the Orchestra. Pupils also have the opportunity to participate in active learning lessons within General Musicianship and Understanding Music.
 

S2

In S2 pupils will continue to build and develop their skills on 2 chosen instruments. Pupils can choose from all the different instruments they experienced in S1 as well as instruments they may have received specialised lessons on e.g. Trumpet, Saxophone etc. Pupils will have the opportunity to perform in front of their peers and evaluate theirs and others work.

Pupils will also continue to develop their listening skills through units of work focused on specific topics such as, Scottish Music, World Music, Instruments of the Orchestra. In these units pupils will discover the social and cultural influences of related styles and musical concepts which are present in the music. In these units pupils will also experiment with composition techniques which will enable them to create their own music.

Pupils will also be able to develop new skills using music technology. Units of work based around creating a podcast and also editing songs will allow pupils to experience the use of music software and recording equipment.


 

S3

In S3 pupils will continue to build and develop their skills on 2 chosen instruments. Pupils can choose from all the different instruments they experienced in S1/S2 as well as instruments they may have received specialised lessons on e.g. Trumpet, Saxophone etc. Pupils will be expected to perform on a regular basis to both the teacher and their class and will have to evaluate theirs and others work.

Pupils will continue to further develop their listening skills through units of work focused on specific topics such as, Scottish Music, World Music, 20th Century, Jazz/Blues, Rock/Pop. In these units pupils will discover the social and cultural influences of related styles and musical concepts which are present in the music. In these units pupils will also experiment with composition techniques which will enable them to create their own music. Pupils will be able to use music software to aid them with the composition element of the course.
